Winter, briefly

A few more photos...

Built an awesome new work bench,

and then an awesome new bike...

and then we got 20" of snow. Nuts.

Better make the best of it by heading up into the hills

Pristine wind-sculpted snow

Above treeline, 40 mph winds were trying to sculpt my face

Such a gorgeous landscape

Finally I caught a glimpse of my goal, the peak on the left first, then a traverse to the one on the right

But as soon as I got up near the first summit, these clouds blew in, driven by 60+ mph winds. So much for the snowy traverse. No axe or crampons in that wind and zero visibility wasn't to my liking, so I backed down. 3 hours later I was back at the car, dead tired.

Now off to the desert for a big ride tomorrow and some chunky fun on Sunday.

South to North Arapahoe?

I dig the red Lev. Nice looking setup. Is it 2x9 -- no big ring?

Looks like it was build to destroy the AZT 300, or Coconino, or Grand Loop...

Are those the ergon grips on your new bike? I thought you weren't a huge fan.

Also, well done on the work bench!

Awesome pictures, Kurt! I'm jealous of your mountains. :-)

And happy (late) birthday, too. Hope it was an enjoyable one!

Chris - Yup, South to North Arapahoe. Had to settle for just South.

Scott - It would be a great bike to take on any of those big races. We'll see which ones are in store for next year! It's 2x9 (22-38, 12-32) and that combo seems perfect for everything. I just had it out in Moab this weekend and the bike was absolutely outstanding on the big drops and gnarly switchbacks down Rockstacker. Can't complain at all.

Maggie - I love the Ergon grips for "short" stuff, but for multi-day races, they don't quite agree with one of the nerves in my hands.

Shannon - Thanks! The mountains are great, and my birthday was splendid.

The traverse is fun, i've done it a couple times now. It's pretty interesting in a lot of loose snow. I think it gets easier once the winter winds hammer the heck out of it. The crux I think is the last "step down" on the ridge before the final climb up the gully to NA summit. There is no way to lower off it directly and skirting around it is pretty interesting. The slab that everyone freaks out about is not a big deal up or down.
